As much as you enjoy gardening, there comes a moment when you realize that it’s hard to keep up with everything on your own. You need some additional help with things around the space, so you’re thinking about hiring a landscaper or a gardener. The trouble is, you’re unsure what the difference is between the two, so how do you know which one to pick?

What Gardeners Do For You

Anyone offering gardening services will typically provide one main service for you: they look after and maintain your existing garden. You tell them what needs to be done, and they’ll do it – perhaps pitching in with some maintenance ideas here and there.

What Landscapers Do For You

By contrast, landscaping is an entirely different discipline that involves multiple potential services. As detailed by The Great Canadian Landscaping Company, landscapers tend to help you with the following:

  • Designing your garden
  • Installing a new garden landscape
  • Maintaining your garden

How To Choose The Right Garden Service For Your Needs

It’s actually a relatively simple decision once you know the difference between the two garden-related services. Hiring a gardener only really makes sense if you’re satisfied with your current garden and don’t wish to make any changes. Maybe you’re finding it hard to fit garden maintenance into your busy schedule – or perhaps you’ve dealt with bad weather recently and need assistance restoring your garden space

In these situations, gardeners can help because they’re assisting you with your existing garden area.

On the other hand, a landscaping company is a better choice if you’re open to switching up your garden’s design. They can still provide general maintenance to an existing garden anyway, but a landscaper is also more likely to offer tips on altering the layout of your garden to make things grow better. At the same time, if you’re looking to renovate the entire space and make more out of the garden you’ve been given, then a gardener won’t be of any help. You need a professional landscaper who can draw up the designer for you and then work on turning your garden into something new and exciting.

So, if you have gardening needs that revolve more around altering your garden, then a landscaper is the much better bet. Some argue that landscapers provide better general maintenance than gardeners as well, mainly because they’re capable of doing more extensive work for you. As mentioned above, they can identify ways to improve your garden layout, but they can also replace a lawn that’s no longer able to grow, or dig better drainage during the wetter parts of the year, etc.

Final Thoughts: Both Serve A Purpose

When all’s said and done, both gardeners and landscapers serve a purpose and will be useful for different people. It’s all about what matters to you – and how much help you need with your garden space. If you just need someone to mow the lawn and de-weed every few weeks, then you’re wasting the benefits of a landscaper. But if you’re more open to detailed maintenance or garden changes/upgrades, then landscaping is always the better approach.
