Business Can Become More Sustainable

As the new year approaches, most businesses will share one resolution: become greener.

Sustainability isn’t only necessary to protect the planet. It also translates to increased employee happiness, improved client reactions, and long-term savings. However, knowing that you want to go green is one thing but actively doing it is another. Add the following five ideas to your strategy and you should see stunning results.

1| Use Less Space

The road to eco-friendly operations largely revolves around reducing waste. One of the best ways to do this is by operating from a smaller workspace where possible. Railing companies and mezzanine floor architects can help you maximize the space you have. This can save you from expensive and resource-heavy extensions. Alternatively, it could save you from moving to a larger workspace or developing on new land.

You will also find that smaller spaces use less money on expenses like HVAC.

2| Use Less Energy

As already touched upon, one of the main reasons to use a smaller workspace is that you’ll use less energy. However, you can cut your energy consumption in other ways too. Switching to a fleet of hybrid or electric vehicles will make a huge difference. Meanwhile, adding solar panels and renewable power generators can save money as well as the planet. Better still, the benefits will be seen right away.

Many of the changes will be noticed by employees and customers alike.

3| Use Less Plastic

Reduced energy consumption is a huge step in the right direction. For the best results, though, you should also place an emphasis on plastic use. Where possible, cutting out single-use plastic in favor of recyclable materials is advised. Alternatively, you may wish to invest in a more sustainable approach to plastic recycling. Either way, you should notice a significant improvement in your bid to reduce your carbon footprint.

If there is only one material that you look to address, plastic should be the answer.

4| Use Less Travel

Travel is a necessary part of business. However, it does have a negative impact on the planet. As such, any opportunity to reduce the frequency of travel should be grabbed with both hands. Video conferencing may allow you to cut a large percentage of journeys to visit clients or business partners. Meanwhile, team messaging apps and project management tools can aid internal communication. This brings teams closer too.

You’ll save time and resources. Perhaps most importantly, employees will have more time.

5| Use Less Of A Reliance On Imported Goods

Finally, it’s important to recognize that going green is bigger than your company. The suppliers you use will have a huge impact, even if it’s on an indirect basis. Working with companies that use green habits themselves will be hugely helpful. Crucially, though, you should try to use local materials where possible. Aside from boosting the local economy, it means fewer emissions are created from transportation.

Do this in combination with the other steps and your future will look far brighter.
