As we all know, it’s becoming more important than ever that we take care of the planet. We should have been doing this all along, but we didn’t and now we all need to start working double time to make this happen. Business owners are among the biggest contributors to problems with the environment and the atmosphere, which is why we’re starting here.

Specifically in this article we’re going to be focusing on restaurant owners and what they can do to become more green this year. We’re not saying that this is the biggest industry responsible for issues, but we’ve got to start somewhere! So, if you would like to find out more, feel free to read on.

Grow Some Of Your Own Food

The first thing that we’re going to recommend is that you see if you can grow any of your own food. Now, we understand that you might have read that and thought that we were having a laugh, but we’re not. We understand the scale that you would need to grow on to feed your entire business, but we’re not saying that you have to do that. But, any food that you can grow yourself would be a massive help to the environment as that’s less growing elsewhere with dangerous pesticides and so on.

To make this happen, you would need to invest in a commercial greenhouse to ensure that it was big enough. If you have space on site somewhere you could put this outback, or if you’re limited on space then you need to find another location for this. You can start off small to see how it goes, and then you can increase how much you are growing yourself and how much you are using in your business.

Attempt To Reduce Food Waste

Keeping on the same kind of theme, you need to attempt to reduce food waste as much as you can. Despite what people think, food waste is a real problem in the restaurant industry and if you’re the owner of one then you already know that. The planet does not have infinite resources, and we can’t afford to be wasting them like this. So, there are a couple of different ways for you to reduce food waste. The first one is not to cook anything unless it’s ordered. If something goes wrong with the order, don’t throw it away, give it to a member of staff or something.

Any leftover food that you have that you cannot use, you should consider donating it. There’s no need for all of that food to go in the trash when there are people out there who would be super grateful for it, and not only that, it’s better than just throwing it all away.

Follow the Relevant Laws

Everyone knows they’ve to follow the law, from general federal laws like paying your taxes to Arizona’s section ARS 13-1404. What you mightn’t have realized is your business might need to follow more than a few sustainability laws as it operates. You’ll need to know about these and properly understand them.

They’ll have federal maximums for waste, for example, while outlining any sustainability efforts you’ve to follow. See this as the basics and aim to go above and beyond whenever you can.

Invest In Your Appliances

On top of both of those things, you need to be investing in your appliances to ensure that they are as energy efficient as possible. Seeing as you’re going to need to use your appliances on a daily basis, you need ones that are working with you, not against you in terms of power usage. This is not just for the sake of the planet either, but for the sake of your energy bills also!

Take a look around to see what is on offer, how much it’s going to cost, and all other information like this. Then, you can use this to make the best possible decisions, helping you to go greener this year.

Work With Sustainable Suppliers

Last but by no means least, you need to work with reliable, sustainable suppliers. You want suppliers who only get their items from sustainable sources and who are also interested in sustainable practices themselves. This way, you can say that you are only partnering with the best, and that you have ensured that your business is as green as possible on all fronts. This is going to massively appeal to those who are conscious of the environment themselves, attracting people who prefer to only use businesses who take this approach.

So, there you have it. These are just some of the things that you can do as a restaurant owner to ensure that your business becomes more green this year. We’ve all got to do our part to take care of the planet, and every business owner should be looking for ways to make this happen. The more that you educate yourself on sustainable practices, the more improvements you’re going to be able to make!
